Brussels Airlines suspends flights until April
Brussels Airlines is the latest airline to join the list of airlines to suspend their operation on a temporary basis. Brussels Airlines is part of the Lufthansa Group which consists of Lufthansa, Swiss , Austrian Airlines and Eurowings. Austrian Airlines has announced it would suspend all operations from March 18th though it has said it would keep two aircrafts on standby for emergency operations. Brussels Airlines is based in Brussels and operates to 100 destinations with a fleet of 48 aircraft dominated by Airbus operating around 250 flights daily.
Suspension of flights
Brussels Airlines in a statement has said it would suspend all its flights until April 19th 2020. It is part of the Lufthansa group which would make it more easier to rebook passengers onto Swiss or Lufthansa.
A statement by the company says ,“Given the extraordinary circumstances caused by the worldwide Coronavirus crisis, we have decided to temporarily suspend our flight operations from Saturday, 21 March until 19 April 2020 included.Rest assured that we are already putting all our efforts into restarting operations on 20 April 2020 to serve you again with the extra smile you are used to”.
The airline would gradually reduce operations until they suspend all of them coming Saturday. The carrier would keep aircraft on standby like their counterpart Austrian Airlines for emergency operations.
Temporary Technical unemployment
Around 1500 staff of Brussels Airlines were working on temporary unemployment since March 16th. Since this announcement almost all of its 4000 strong staff would be temporarily unemployed until the airline restarts its operations. Brussels Airline isn’t the only airline to bring in drastic measures as on a global level airlines such as British Airways, KLM, Norwegian , American Airlines, are doing everything they can to conserve cash by suspending flights, grounding aircraft and laying off staff. Airlines have been hit with travel bans and restrictions which has plummeted demand for air travel.
